EDUCATIONAL EXPLORATION
I have decided to become familiar with a new subject every month. It could be anything from world history to math to music to yada yada yada. You should try it too. Why? Well, why do anything? Why spend countless hours mindlessly scrolling through thousands of inconsequential videos and pictures every night? Why spend hours each day watching basketball or football or any other reality TV show that’s on?
I think we have been conditioned to believe that easy consumption — videos or other media that require little to no attention or information retention — is better simply because it is easier. Whereas to dedicate time to learning a new skill, trying a new hobby, or learning a new subject, not for money but simply because, is a waste of time. I guess, in a way, both activities are just ways to pass the time while we are here, but I argue that the latter will offer more opportunities in the future. The skills, hobbies, and education we pick up — if practiced or used consistently will compound on itself, offering opportunities that could never be reached while mindlessly consuming content.
Over the next 30 days, I plan to become acquainted with the art of critical decision-making, as taught by former Harvard professor Michael A. Roberto, through a collection of lectures produced for The Great Courses series. I will be documenting my experience and sharing the knowledge I learn on this page. Feel free to follow along!
